Making Waves in Soca

From its release in 2010 for Vincy Carnival, Charge Up/Duracell track created quite a frenzy amongst soca lovers across the world. It therefore came as no surprise that this Alex “Kubiyashi” Barnwell produced single secured Skinny Fabulous his third soca monarch title and landed him a place in the prestigious International Soca Monarch competition in Trinidad on the 4th March, 2011.

Immediately after, came the collaboration with Machel Montano on the Charge Up single followed by a music video directed by Edward Burke of Elite Media Concepts during the Miami Carnival weekend. Most recently, he released the Charge Up “Trini Road Mix” done by Scratchmaster.

Both tracks appear on the 18 track compilation album “Roast Breadfruit and Butter “ along with four other singles from Skinny Fabulous - Strong Rum, On the Road, Boom Blast and Bumper In Trouble. Since his rise to prominence in 2008 with “Head Bad”, this energetic performer is gradually making a name for himself in all the right circles.

Before making his way to Trinidad Carnival later this month, he will be performing at Barbados’ Caribfest Awards on the 9th January, 2011.

From Crop Over TO Carnival

After taking the soca scene by storm with his 2010 hit “Go Down”, Lil Rick gets ready to make his first appearance in Trinidad, the Carnival capital of the Caribbean, later this month. The hugely popular Condemn riddim, produced by Barbadian producer Peter Coppin also features the likes of Alison Hinds, a collaboration with Skinny Fabulous and Timeka Marshall and Beenie Man amongst others.

Since its release in July, 2010, the infectious single has dominated soca charts across the region. In late December, a remix featuring the King of Soca Machel Montano created additional momentum for the single driving it onto the charts once again.

“ I’m looking forward to performing in Trinidad this year. The response so far wherever I have performed Go Down since Crop Over has been unbelievable…I don’t expect that Trinidad will be any different” says Lil Rick.

It is expected that Lil Rick will certainly leave his mark on Trinidad carnival as he prepares to unleash some traditional “Bajan wuk ups” for the soca lovers who will flock to the twin island republic for the Carnival season. Stay tuned for more information on the upcoming events.

Tanya Stephens NOT Booked For Rebel Salute

Reggae artiste, Tanya Stephens will not be appearing on this year's Pepsi Rebel Salute.

The artiste's camp was recently made aware that her images and tracks were being utilized in advertisements for the upcoming January 15 show. However, the promoter of the event, Mr. Patrick Barrett, known to fans as Tony Rebel has NOT to date, confirmed Stephens for the event.

Barrett had contacted Stephens' manager, Andrew Henton, inquiring about Stephens' schedule and if it could accommodate the Rebel Salute date. Henton told Barrett, Stephens would be available and thereafter sent a contract to Barrett's camp on December 22, 2010. Upon sending the contract, no further discussion occurred between the two parties.

"The only thing that confirms an engagement is a contract, so when they didn't contact us after, I assumed I wasn't on the show. Am I to assume that I am booked for any and all shows people call my manager about yet do not call back to confirm and send a signed contract? Do I just show up at these events because they called to enquire?" says Stephens.

Stephens also says, "I am weary of the bad business practices in Jamaica. There is no misunderstanding. We didn't have a discussion that I was booked for the show, neither did I sign a contract, yet I am being advertised and at the end of the day I get the bad rap when my fans do not know why I don't appear on some of these shows. I am not here to teach Jamaican people how to do business, but they will know how to do business with Tanya Stephens. My issue goes far beyond Tony Rebel not having the gall to call back and confirm or do things the right way, the issue of following protocol in the Jamaican music industry is my problem."

"I have an obligation to my fans to come out as Tanya Stephens and let them know it's false; I will not be at the show," she concluded.

In closing, Stephens was tight-lipped, yet guaranteed that fans would see her on one of their favourite local concerts soon. Throughout the years, Stephens has become internationally known for her wide array of musical masterpieces that consistently paint a vivid picture of the human condition. The artiste who was hailed by the Washington Post as one of Jamaica's leading artistes, is known for hits including: Yuh Nuh Ready Fi Dis Yet, Boom Wuk, It's A Pity, These Streets, Cry and Bawl and more.
