Minott's Cover of Silver Words Decorates the Charts

A new version of the 1970’s hit Silver Words has hit FM radio like a tornado. The latest cover is sung by singer and show promoter Robert Minott. It features rapper Kirk KBZ.

A joint production between Minott and noted producer Kirk ‘Kirkledove’ Bennett, Silver Words is the follow up to Minott’s recent chart topping single Right Man Fi Yuh.

In a release to the media, Minott explained his reasons for covering the classic hit. “I was driving down the highway when out of nowhere the vibe hit me so I called Kirk 'Kirkledove' Bennett and asked him to check out this idea for the next release. I sang it to him and his response was, "wicked". He then asked me to record the idea for the song on his voicemail”.

To inject a bit of crossover appeal to the recording, rapper Kirk KBZ was brought in to throw down a few lines. “Well, Kirk KBZ is the nephew of a friend who mentioned to me that he is a very good rapper. I checked out his flow and I was very impressed. We then went to the studio and chopped it up”, said Minott.

The response to the song has been positive according to Minott. The song has moved up two places to number 23 on the Jamaica Music Countdown Top 25 Reggae singles chart. Airplay both in Jamaica and outside of Jamaica in mostly reggae markets has been encouraging.

Asked how he felt about the success of the song to date, Minott said “I'm ecstatic! It's always a great feeling knowing when you put your heart and soul into anything and it’s accepted by the public”.

Silver Words was originally written and recorded by Sixto Diaz Rodriquez in 1971. In 1973, Winston ‘Niney” Holness produced the more popular version recorded by Ken Boothe and released on the Observer label. Other reggae covers of Silver Words were recorded by Bob Andy, Dennis Brown, Barrington Levy and Richie Stephens.
