Bass Odyssey and Black Kat Vie for Title‏

Despite international visibility and fame, there is an age old debate that resonates among clash fans of which sound rules Jamaica's countryside -- Bass Odyssey or Black Kat. Hailing from the remote Jamaican territories of Saint Ann and Christiana, far from the city life of Dancehall hotbed Kingston, respectively Bass Odyssey and Black Kat have been battling over the title of Jamaica's top country sound for years.

Now, before thousands of clash revelers at both World Clash New York R.E.S.E.T. on Saturday, April 7 (w/Fire Links, Tony Matterhorn, Poison Dart, Earth Ruler and David Rodigan) and World Clash Jamaica R.E.S.E.T. on Easter Monday, April 9 (w/Kilamanjaro, Black Blunt, Heavy Hammer, Rootsman and Code Red), these powerhouse sounds will settle the score. While the stages in New York and Jamaica will serve as battlefields, the ultimate proving ground for Bass Odyssey and Black Kat will clearly be in their homeland in front of loyal supporters at Pier One.

Stellar war sounds Bass Odyssey and Black Kat are synonymous with high power sound clash. Rising to prominence in the early 90's, the sounds have cemented them selves as fixtures in the sound clash arena, generating scores of victories, a worldwide fan base and the utmost respect from fellow members of the fraternity. Known for craftily defeating legions of sounds over time, Bass Odyssey and Black Kat remain the most feared players in game. Most of today's modern day sound systems don't feel that they can properly reach the big leagues without facing off against these clash leaders.

It's no secret that Bass Odyssey and Black Kat are not just dynamic sounds, but also powerhouse brands. Their names carry weight, allowing them to periodically interchange and showcase team players without losing their position or credibility. Regardless of who plays the sounds, one can almost always anticipate high caliber, strategic sound clash entertainment.

Bass Odyssey also excels in juggling. Boasting the role of teacher, some of today's most prominent sound men admit to learning or studying the tactics and careers of Bass Odyssey and Black Kat front men. Historically, one of the most heralded and praised duos in the sound clash industry consisted of DJ Mark and the late, great Squingy of Bass Odyssey.

Tied with 7 World Clash victories (along with "The Far East Rulers" Mighty Crown), Bass Odyssey and Black Kat are set to come head to head on two World Clash stages in April 2012. There is intense energy among fans centered on these highly anticipated face offs. Whenever, these two giants are billed for the same event, only "helter skelter" can erupt. While Bass Odyssey boldly attacks contenders with a fusion of well structured speeches and sharp music selections, Black Kat's team often dons smiles and sneakily strikes opponents with witty warnings and well-known dub plate anthems.

No matter one's position on who will take home the coveted World Clash R.E.S.E.T. trophies, fans are certain that Bass Odyssey and Black Kat's showdown will be forever written in the pages of Dancehall history. For R.E.S.E.T. New York, limited tickets are available online and in select retail outlets. R.E.S.E.T. Jamaica tickets will be available at the gate only.

The Dutch Productions/ Stratosphere Music Releases Iyanola Riddim

Iyanola was the name given to Saint Lucia by the first settlers, the Amerindians. Actually, the name in its modern incarnation is phonetically and linguistically different – the original name was modified to Iyanola by members of the Rastafarian movement in the country. Its meaning, like the riddim that now proudly carries it is the same – Iyanola the name was the first to capture the beauty of Saint Lucia, land of iguanas, home to a proud people that includes award winning songwriter and producer Courtney “Curty” Louis featuring keyboardist Stephen “Horseface” Mathurin in the mix.

The Dutch Productions/ Stratosphere Music riddim was built in Bois D’Orange, Saint Lucia; it is the first music released by the production house in 2012 and features Mongstar on “Saint Lucia We Love;” Ambi on “Madam La;” Scady Dot P on “Hey Scady;” Marie-Anne on “Fall in Love” newcomer J Budz on “Pumping” and Grenadian soca king
Mr Killa on “Do You Wanna Party?”

The Iyanola riddim is a departure from what is thought of as traditional soca with musical influences that include techno, funk and rock – all the songs stand on their own but played together gives a hint of what Saint Lucian music, its artistes and producers have to offer.

Savile Row Tailor Andrew Ramroop To Train Mission Catwalk Season Two Winner‏

In addition to receiving an array of prizes which include the opportunity to show at London Fashion week in September 2012, the winner of Mission Catwalk Season two will learn the secrets of Savile Row tailoring under the watchful tutelage of world renowned Master Tailor Prof. Andrew Ramroop OBE at his Savile Row Academy (SRA) in London. Trinidad-born Ramroop made the offer, a GBP £14,7000 (US$23,000) value, to host and executive producer Keneea Linton-George during her recent visit to the UK for London Fashion Week.

“With the abundance of talent in the Caribbean, teaming up with Mission Catwalk presents an opportunity to my people to raise a new generation of highly skilled designers that not only conceptualize their designs but can execute them as well,” says Ramroop who opened SRA in 2008 at his 19 Savile Row location.

Built in the 1730s, and named after Lady Dorothy Savile, wife of the 3rd Earl of Burlington, the famous street is considered to be the mecca of men’s tailoring. Stores along London’s “Colden Mile of Tailoring” boast a long list of famous clients including Winston Churchill, Prince Charles, Michael Jackson, Jay-Z, Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. Even fashion designers (Calvin Klein, Alexander McQueen) have used Savile Row tailors to add the right touch of quality and elegance to their designs. With his purchase of Maurice Sedwell Ltd., Ramroop made history as the first person of color to own a tailoring house on Savile Row.

Over his 50 year career Andrew Ramroop has been globally recognized for his work in bespoke tailoring. In 2005 he received the Chaconia Gold Medal from the president of Trinidad and Tobago; three years later he was appointed by the Queen to the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, and since 2002 the W.E.B DuBois Institute of Harvard University has offered an annual prize in his name. He has twice captured the title of ‘Best Men’s Wear: Design, Cut and Fit’ in the Golden Shears Awards, considered the Oscars of tailoring.

“Like the SRA, Mission Catwalk has set very high standards of excellence,” says Linton-George. “To partner with such a reputable institution furthers our goal to show designers how far talent can go when combined with hard work and dedication.”

The reality series which starts March 27 on Television Jamaica will see contestants from Barbados, Belize, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and home country Jamaica competing in weekly challenges which test their skill and creativity. Apart from the first episode on which five designers are swiftly eliminated, each week one designer will be cut from the competition by a panel that includes Linton-George, Jamaica Observer lifestyle editor Novia McDonald-Whyte, menswear designer Carlton Brown and a guest judge. The thirteen week series culminates with three designers at a live showdown in Kingston where the winner will be chosen.

Prizes for the lucky designer include JMD$500,000 courtesy of National Commercial Bank of Jamaica (NCB) to start their clothing line, industrial sewing equipment valued at JMD$200,000 courtesy of singer Jamaica, a contract to sell their designs at SOHO boutique, a six-page fashion editorial in Ocean Style Magazine and a scholarship to pursue fashion program at London College of Fashion where incidentally Mr. Ramroop is a graduate and lecturer.

Mission Catwalk Season 2, presented by NCB, Supreme Ventures and Digicel, airs every Tuesday at 8:30 PM on Television Jamaica starting March 27th. Viewers in Barbados, Belize, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago please check local listings.

Stacious-"Do You Like It‏?"

6 weeks in the German Black Charts, peak on #23. Following her hit feature with dancehall star Mavado (“Come into my room”) this number is an additional party song by the young Jamaican dancehall lady which was only cobbled together to hammer away at the bass controllers in the world’s clubs to remind them what their job in the evening is really all about!

The number has been devised as a single version of the anniversary album of the “Kingstone” label / sound system that is thus celebrating its 15th anniversary (15 years Kingstone) and accordingly there is also a German RMX version with Youthman as Rubixxx Remix.

This mix which is more of an 80s number and has very honest lyrics is a beautiful alternative to the very electronic hard mix of beat architect Ben Bazzazian, who really targets the woofer centres and successfully pulls off a crossover number of various different styles.Distortion effects, abrupt stops and diced vocals make this song so special.

The crowning conclusion is then marked by a Diamond Bra RMX which, with a view to the pending Riddim Selection, features the following acts: T.O.K, Buccaneer, Ziggi Recado, Ce ́Cile. This RMX is based on Central America and is clearly characterised by Reggaeton vibe.
