Tanya Carter Calls On Birch for "Ex-boyfriend'

After more than two dozen performances across the world, Belizean songstress, Tanya Carter, has decided to spread her wings to Jamaica. Excited about crossing over to Reggae, she has been working closely with Christopher Birch of Birchill Records, who produced and co-wrote her newest single: Ex-boyfriend. Singing since the age of 5, Tanya takes her inspiration from Jamaican greats: Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, and Burning Spear; and discovered at an early age her passion for Reggae and Jamaica culture.

The Belizean is no stranger to Jamaicans, having opened for Etana, Luciano, Lexxus and Morgan Heritage and decided to come to the home of Reggae music to get a better understanding of the culture around the genre she loves, and to work with some of the best producers in the business.

With several years of performing under her belt, she is currently working on her second album, which contains Reggae, Jazz, Electro, Pop, Dancehall and R&B infusions. Her versatility knows no bounds and her passion for music has resulted in a number of accolades. The greatest of which is being named “Best Female Vocalist of the Year” at the Belize Music Awards three years in a row (2010, 2011 and 2012).

Tanya’s debut album Daydreaming was named the best album in Belize upon its release in 2011 and tunes from the album graced the airwaves in Jamaica, Los Angeles, Africa, Mexico and even climbed to number 3 on the Lithuanian music charts. Now, on a path to making authentic Reggae music, Tanya’s new single Ex-boyfriend, produced by Birchill Records, is a one of a kind composition. The infectious beat and catchy lyrics make it impossible for you to listen to the song just once and fully captures the common emotions involved with having an ex-lover you are not quite over, something many ladies, and even some men, can identify with.

Christopher Birch of Birchill Records says he was happy to work with Tanya:”She is a real artiste, a great singer with the full package, she writes, she harmonizes, she is very talented and it was a pleasure working with her. I think she can make it in this industry, Reggae is a very aggressive industry, so she has to put out the right energy, which I think she has. We have plans for more tunes, and the next one is very catchy, so Jamaica needs to watch for Tanya.” Tanya’s sultry voice and precise melody on the track allows for easy listening and in no time you realize you are singing along.

Although several songs have been written about this relationship dilemma, Ex-boyfriend brings a fresh spin on the situation. She belts “I never knew this feeling that you’re giving me would take me to another place with your love, see I never knew the loving was so good that it scared me and it made me want to fly away with your love” in the first verse, telling a tale of the love she has for her ex-boyfriend despite being with a new beau.

Tanya shows her command of patois in the chorus where she sings: “Although mi new man a treat me right, mi wah back mi ex-boyfriend”. And the story continues to unravel, after she confesses: “I must admit I’m not over you although we parted ‘bout a year or two, my new man he’ll never know, you’re the star of my show”. Get the full story by listening to Tanya’s first Jamaican-produced single Ex-Boyfriend.

Sampaloo Welcomes The "Immigration" Album With Community Event

Montreal’s young veteran, Sampaloo, has been dominating the Canadian Dancehall scene for over a decade. In the last year Sampaloo has accomplished a lot in Jamaican pop culture representing not only Montreal but all of Canada in the reggae market. The artist has come a long way since the days of the good old house parties, popular bashment venue Tiffany’s and when regular weekly events at Blue Dog Motel was the place to be.

Sampaloo became well-known in his community by hosting and performing at community events for many of the Caribbean Associations, Church Events, Penitentiary’s, and Cote-Des-Neiges’ Centre Jeunesse Emplois BBQ’s. In late 2011 Sampaloo joined forces with current manager Reeva Ann Proctor, prominent Canadian based dancehall and reggae entertainment publicist.

In early 2012 Proctor brokered a recording contract with upcoming label Kimichi Records resulting in the recording of two of his most rotated songs throughout Jamaica, Canada, United States, and England. His collaboration with Bounty Killers “Alliance Next Generation” artist, Patexx received great feedback from Jamaican Radio Disk Jocks, creating a great buzz for the Montreal entertainer.

Last summer the artist released his music video for single “Roll Out”, recorded on the popular Jamaican Riddim “Paparazzi”. He captured the history of the “Uptown” community showcasing the Barclay murals that no longer stand today.

The video caught the attention of the media worldwide with placement on popular Jamaican media sites and hit almost 3500 views in 2 months. The artist expects to drop 3-4 more music videos this year, two of which are expected to hit just in time for summer. The team’s most anticipated being for his unreleased one-drop single “Journey” off of Morgan Heritages label, Tenement Yard Records spearheaded by Drezion.

With growing popularity the artist and his team decided that it was time to release an album for his fans showcasing the best of Sampaloo since 2004. The album starts with his 2004 Canadian Reggae Music Award nominated single “Immigration” which is also the title Sampaloo chose for his Debut album. Sampaloo states that the single was the beginning of his journey to becoming a Montreal recording artist and the album is designed to showcase just that, “The Sampaloo Story – From Jamaica to Canada”.

The album is a mix and blend of Sampaloo’s versatility featuring classic dancehall tracks, one drop riddims as well as even a bit of techno. The album will release shortly after the launch party due to I tunes approval. Sampaloo invites Montreal to come out to “The Return of Welcome to Montreal, the Album Launch Edition” Saturday, March 30th, 10pm Sharp at Montreal’s Jamaica Association.

Hosted by Vibe Time, Douglas Barkley, K-Dogg, Garry T and Singing P the line-up will also include some of Montreal’s greatest veteran and young artists both in the Hip-Hop and Reggae Scene as well as special out of town guests coming from Quebec City, Ottawa and Toronto. You can also catch Little Thunder Sound, James Bond, Skyhawk Int’l, Nemesis Sound and Johnny Blacks among other sounds on the 1’s and 2’s that evening.

Linkage Awards Struggles for Reggae Recognition

Saturday, March 16th the 4th annual Linkage Awards made its presentation at Mount Vernon High School in Mount Vernon, New York. Red carpet treatment began at 7 in the evening where various artists went through the pomp of media and attention talking to a variety of well attended press including Wynford Williams and crew as well as ER. Several local TV networks were also in attendance to get a piece of the action and a ton of Social Media journalists popped their recorders in everybody’s face.

The actual staging began about a half hour late due to technical difficulties, but the real fact is even the Grammy’s are loosing ratings as far as award shows are concerned. Linkage had some restrictions due to budgetary considerations but managed to transform the space into a positive and entertaining event. Artist support was sterling including Lady Saw, Luciano, Sanchez, John Holt, Lady G, Konshens,, Romaine Virgo, Christopher Martin, Nature, Khago and many more.

An 80% capacity crowd made their way to the auditorium despite snow on the last day of winter. And they enjoyed themselves even though at times some of the action looked to resemble an unintentional Saturday Night Live skit. It was like a presentation periodically weak on sound quality and a band that would just stick it out until eventual transition to clarity would come. It subsequently got to the point where surrealistic antics via what seemed like a Caribbean Karaoke singer staggered the audience.

But none of this bothered Sanchez dressed in his floor length mink stole rocking in his front row seat periodically shaking the hands of various fans and well wishers. People were just happy to have an appreciation for solid performances and for the hard work that reggae and dancehall talent goes though to make an honest living.

There were a ton of awards presented including Isaiah Laing getting the Producer of the year award for Sting 2012, a solid turn around for this brand. Ninjaman won the Life Time Achievement Award, Nature the Break Out Artist of the year, Khago and I Octane won a few as well as Konshens and Christopher Martin who won two each and Lady Saw about three. Performance wise Luciano and Lady Saw stood out even though Nature gave them some dance routines that caught attention when he sang World Peace.

Fans were seen later congratulating this new youth to the US market encouraging him to continue along his path of clean and conscious music. But as always Lady Saw squeezed out a little extra by recognizing DownSound Records boss, Josef Bogdanovich sitting in the front row with a couple of white girls.

Saw gave the exec a shout asking him for a lift on his private jet and later teased him with a few X rated compliments getting a stir from the audience. Bogdanovich smiled then got up from his seat, walked back stage and congratulated Lady Saw for being the best female in the business.
