Video: Eek-A-Mouse's Anthology - DVD Teaser

On November 5, 2013, 17 North Parade will unlock another one of its musical treasures, Eek-A-Mouse's 2 CD+DVD Reggae Anthology: Eek-Ology. The VP Records vintage imprint reveals a rare exclusive clip from the DVD, which features Eek-A-Mouse's iconic performance at the 1982 Reggae Sunsplash festival in Jamaica. Eek-A-Mouse shouts out KCRW during this live on-stage performance, so it only seemed fitting to have Southern California's leading National Public Radio affiliate shed some light on their connection with reggae during this time.

Tom Schnabel, KCRW's former Music Director who started the program's most popular weekend show Reggae Beat back in 1979, retells this compelling story on his KCRW blog Rhythm Planet. The new anthology Eek-Ology is a thoughtful selection of essential hits and rare gems from Eek-A-Mouse's extensive catalogue during the prime of his career. Eek-A-Mouse (born Ripton Joseph Hylton) was one of the most unique talents to emerge from the Jamaican reggae scene in the 1980s.

The Mouse's inimitable vocal flow combines an unconventional melodic approach filled with rhythm and humor, and his unmistakable half-singing, half-deejaying (rapping) style inspired the term "singjay." The anthology features early recordings like his 1979 breakthrough anthem "Once a Virgin" produced by Joe Gibbs, "Modelling Behavior" produced Linval Thompson and his string of '80s hits with producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes ("Virgin Girl," "Wild Like a Tiger," "For Hire and Removal," "Do You Remember" and "Ganja Smuggling").

Fans can also be treated to a selection of rarities, including Eek-A-Mouse's earliest releases "Creation," "My Father's Land" and "No Wicked Can't Reign," all making their CD debut. In addition to the epic DVD featuring his exquisite live stage performance at Jamaica's 1982 Sunsplash, other highlights include extensive liner notes, four previously unreleased songs from a 1983 John Peel BBC Radio 1 session and multiple 12" mixes.

Shaggy Teams Up with Party 105...

...To Save  SACHEM HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BAND

When Sachem school district Superintendent James Nolan realized the Sachem Marching Band needed financial support to survive, he did what any good educator would do, he looked through his Rolodex to find some alumni that could help. He got all the way to the end of his list and found local radio super jocks Vic 'Latino' Canales and Matt Goldapper, the dynamic duo of top Long Island station Party 105 were not only graduates of the district, but they are local radio legends!

The Sachem school district went through a very difficult budget process and as with most districts on Long Island, they began scrambling to raise funds for their programs, organizations and teams. Their marching band, a staple for years, was caught up in this crurch and found out that they needed to raise approximately $45,000 to $50,000 just to keep the program in place. Many parents, teachers and friends thought this was a daunting, impossible task. That's when Mr. Nolan stepped in and offered the idea of a band night, but how to pack the house and raise a lot of money, that's when local radio stepped up to the plate.

Vic 'Latino' canals put his Twitter account into full send mode and called a few of his contacts, but who was in the Party 105 studio that day recording an interview-Superstar Shaggy! Within seconds the event was born. Grammy Award winning music sensation Shaggy is headlining the Save the Music Concert on Friday, November 1st. Live from the Auditorium at Sequoya Middle School in Holtsville, Shaggy will rock the house with all his hits including "Boombastic", "It Wasn't Me" and "Angel".

This is a first for the district, a first for radio station Party 105 and even a first for Shaggy who never played a middle school auditorium! The radio station is a local favorite with students at sachem, the largest school district on Long Island, but having a Party 105 Mega Jam concert in their middle school auditorium was unimaginable. "I can't that the station enough", said Guy Dellecave, Vice President of Sachem Marching Band Parents Alliance, "radio stations just don't do this kind of stuff, but Party 105 and JVC Broadcasting are a local Long Island company and they are constantly doing things for the community, it is just great to have them in our backyard", he added. "I was in the right place at the right time.

When I heard the needs of Sachem Marching Band, I could not turn my back on them. Music is my life, my bread and butta, as Tessanne would say. How could I NOT, do my part in saving these students who may be our musicians of tomorrow" says Shaggy. The event is open to the public, but tickets are limited and this event will sell out. For ticket information contact the Sachem Marching Band Parents Alliance at: 631-828-4423. For additional information on being a part of the cause contact 631-648-2500.
