Experimental hip hop / electro / pop artist Sutten Catchy has officially stepped onto the national stage with the release of his debut long player titled ‘A Well Deserved Break’. Arriving hot on the heels of his critically acclaimed single ‘Rock Shows’ (“One of the freshest hip hop – dubstep crossover tracks you will hear all year” – Word On The Beat), the LP is not only a celebration of Sutten’s previous work, but also marks a major musical stepping stone for the Brighton based lyricist.
For those who are unfamiliar with the name, Sutten's musical journey began at the tender age of 14, and by 2004 he had teamed up with midlands pioneer Reggiimental, and hit the road supporting the likes of KRS One, Saigon, JME (BoyBetterKnow) & Klashnekoff, to name but a few.
By the age of 18, he was a well seasoned artist and had appeared on releases alongside the likes of Wiley, Tinchy Stryder & Chipmunk. He also collaborated with Scratchy of the infamous Roll Deep on a song titled 'The Badman' for Big L3w's E.P release 'I Eat People'.
Then, in 2010, Sutten decided it was finally time to focus on releasing a steady flow of new solo material, and rather than looking for support from a label, he decided to release his singles and debut album himself via his own imprint OneNineThree recordings. Maintaining control over his music is something which is clearly important to Sutten, and on ‘A Well Deserved Break’, he chose to work with a small selection of producers and song writers who shared not only his vision, but also his eclectic musical pallet and interest in experimenting with different genres.
"I just want people to be inspired by my music and take something valuable away from everything I release," Sutten says, "The UK industry is locked with a limited amount of keys, so I'm gonna go cut my own and enter unannounced!”
The album itself is an addictive amalgamation of spine tingling melodies, emotive song writing and powerful production, seamlessly flicking between voluminous club anthems and thought provoking slow jams, whilst lending influences from genres as varied as balearic house, pop, dubstep, hip hop, ambient and electronica along the way.
With so many genres and sounds thrown in the mix, ‘A Well Deserved Break’ maintains an air of vague familiarity throughout, and is ripe for success with audiences from all walks of life, but to critics and purveyors of the genres Sutten Catchy has borrowed from, ‘A Well Deserved Break’ will sound like nothing you have ever heard before.
